Portra in a Scottish winter

Notes on shooting colour film in short, grey days: which speed, how to rate it and how to keep it warm.

From November to February, Glasgow gets about seven hours of usable daylight, and most of it is grey. Colour film handles that better than you might think.

I shoot Portra 400 for almost everything and Portra 800 on the ferry and in late afternoon.

Rate it slower

I rate 400 at 200 in winter. A little extra exposure keeps the shadows clean and the skin tones warm.

Overexpose colour negative. Never underexpose it.

Keep spare rolls in an inside pocket. Cold film gets brittle and batteries die first.
