Twelve crossings to Stornoway

What the late crew on the Ullapool ferry taught me about waiting for a picture, and why the best frames came after midnight.

The 22:40 from Ullapool is not a busy sailing in winter. A few lorries, a handful of cars and the same crew most nights.

For the first three crossings I barely took the camera out. I drank tea in the galley and learned who did what, and when the quiet hour came.

The quiet hour

Once the cars are tied down and the boat is past the point, everyone slows down. That is when people stop noticing you.

“You’ll get your picture when you stop looking for it.”

Donnie, bosun

He was right. Most of the frames in Night Ferry were made between midnight and one, with the deck lights and nothing else.
