The north window in Partick

The north window in Partick

Almost every portrait in Tenement was made beside one kind of window. Here is why north light suits faces.

A window facing north never gets direct sun. The light is soft all day and changes slowly, which gives a sitter time to settle.

Most Glasgow tenements have at least one. I ask to see it before I see anything else in the flat.

Where to put the person

Side-on to the glass, about an arm’s length back, facing slightly towards it. Then turn off every other light in the room.

One window, one person, no lamps. It is the oldest studio there is.

If the walls are dark, I bring a white sheet to bounce a little light back.
